Alapine, An Intentional Womyn's Community

WHERE WE ARE:  Alapine Village, begun in 1997 by three visionary women, is 108 acres located in rural Alabama atop a mountain ridge. The land is rolling and wooded with access to a mountain river. The community is a neighborhood of privately owned 2-acre wooded lots.   An additional 300 acres, adjacent to Alapine Village, with frontage on the river and a combination of hardwood and pine forests has been acquired. Hiking paths have been created to the river, as well as to a knoll with a gorgeous view of the mountain range. Alapine consists of wooden homes and cabins, an earth sheltered home, and manufactured homes. Some lots have RV hookups. Electricity and city water are available while some members use rainwater collection, wood heat, solar energy, propane, and composting toilets.  There are long and short term rentals available in Alapine Village.

.WHO WE ARE:   We are a diverse group of women who celebrate many spiritual paths, pursue a variety of outdoor activities, enjoy vegan to omnivorous diets, and have a commitment to resolving conflict through Nonviolent Communication (NVC) meetings. Residents are full-time, part-time, or seasonal. There are some non-resident lot owners. Dogs and cats are welcome, with some restrictions. We currently range in age from 50’s to 70’s but welcome women of all ages. High speed Internet allows some members to work from their home. Others work in the medical field, social services, and a local assisted living facility. Many are retired. We are within one hour of several cities.

WORKING TOGETHER:      Some members of Alapine Village started Alapine Community Association, Inc. (ACA), a 501(c)3 non-profit, in 2006. ACA was created to meet the special needs of a small rural community, geographically isolated from county and state services and resources. Membership in ACA is voluntary.  We have now reached our goal of creating a community center due to generous donations of a lot and building.   ACA members continue to work toward making our  Community Center both economically and environmentally sustainable. Many of our members are also working toward making our homes and gardens more sustainable, with the ability to survive off grid. The community center provides space for meetings, game nights, potlucks, women’s circles, exercise classes, movie nights, and dances.  Another of our goals is “aging in place”.
